AMD to Finally do SMP?
submitted by clicket
I've been in love w/ AMD as an underdog and innovative company since long before I was ever able to build my own system.. From their partial RISC (and, therefore, somehow like the incredibly awesome DEC Alpha) CPU cores to their mind-blowing benchmarks that overturned Intel's left and right, they've always seemed on top and cutting edge in many ways.. One drawback to my looking to AMD as a source for processing power--and a speedbump to my growing respect for them--has been their not making SMP-enabled CPUs..

When I was planning out my first system, I wanted to use AMD.. Then, I figured, if one AMD K6 is good, why not two? I found out why. I was disappointed and researched dual socket 7 Pentium solutions even after the K62 and Pentium IIs came out..

Now I'm very close to being an ardent supporter of Intel via Abit making use of the PPGA (PGA 370) Celerons on its wonderboard BP6.. K7 sounds nifty because it's easily capable of a 200MHz bus and fun stuph like that, but upgrades can only come in the incremental release of newer, faster CPUs from the Source that this AMD. It's a shame I can't just get a dual board and then get a second processor when needs and funds demand to satisfy my gadgety needs and preference for applications to launch 0.32 seconds faster than before..
